In January of 1986, Dr. Jim began attending Jackson Community College (Jackson, Michigan), and earned a degree in Business Management in December of 1987.  While attending JCC, he served as scoutmaster of Boy Scout Troop 602 in Hudson, and completed his Woodbadge training in 1989.  He then completed his pre-chiropractic requirements at JCC.  On February 7, 1988, Dr. Jim and Jan became the proud parents of a daughter, Danielle Ashley Spencer.  In July of 1989, Dr. Jim matriculated at Palmer College of Chiropractic in Davenport, Iowa.  While there, Dr. Jim joined the Pi Kappa Chi professional fraternity, and served as secretary and president.  Drawing from his involvement in Boy Scouts, he served as a unit commissioner for the Illowa Council, and started the Chiropractic Explorer Post, based at Palmer.  Dr. Jim graduated from Palmer in October of 1992.  In addition to earning his D.C. (Doctor of Chiropractic) degree, he earned a B.S. degree in science, and earned diplomate status with the National Board of Chiropractic Examiners.

Dr. Jim delivered his second son, Dominic Michael, at home on September 28, 1997.  In February of 2001, Dr. Jim was named as a staff physician at Hillsdale Community Health Center in Hillsdale, MI.  This hospital is one of the very first in the state to have Doctors of Chiropractic serving as staff physicians.  This allows greater cooperation among health care providers of different disciplines, and better care options for HCHC's patients.  Dr. Dan also serves on the HCHC physician staff.  Both doctors serve on the Family Practice and Outpatient Services Committees.

Dr. Jim was one of the first members of the Hudson Jaycees, serving as the chapter's charter president.  He is a member of the American Legion Post 180, and a lifetime member of the Veteran's of Foreign Wars, Post 3730.  He has been a member of the Hudson city planning commission for several years.  Dr. Jim is also a charter member of the Lenawee County (MI) Woodcarvers, and has served as secretary/treasurer of the club.  He also holds memberships in the Lenawee County Family Researchers, Ancestry Club, Genealogy by Computing Club, and the Spencer Historical and Genealogical Society, all of which are genealogical research clubs.  Dr. Jim has made his family tree available on this site for all who would like to see it.  He has been very involved in the 'living history' of the Civil War, re-enacting a soldier from the 18th Michigan Volunteer Infantry.  Also, Dr. Jim is an active Century Club member of the Michigan Chiropractic Society.

Dr. Jim's family is also very involved in re-creating their Scottish ancestral heritage.  Dr. Jim and Derek both play the highland bagpipes in the Hillsdale College pipe & drum band, Tulloch Ard.  Dominic is currently learning to play bagpipes on his practice chanter, and Danielle plays bass drum and performs the sword dance.  Further, the family has been very involved in French & Indian War re-enacting with the 42nd Royal Highlanders.
